Nine studies for the creation of backdrops for a theatrical reading. My contribution to the animation of a small community library brought to life thanks to the collective efforts of the inhabitants of a neighbourhood in a city in northern Italy. The project gave me the opportunity to study the chromatic effects of night-time lighting in interiors and exteriors, a topic I am teaching in my courses on drawing, painting and art history.

The work, inspired by Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast, seeks to evoke a sense of magic and enchantment. While the film refers to Gustave Doré and Johannes Vermeer, the artist has found inspiration in a random selection of images from a book on gardens, reminding us that nature, in which the female figures wander, is the real protagonist. The black and white ink work mixes the images in a positive and negative geometry.
